Online MBA

When I began looking into an online MBA program the most important aspects to me were that the degree would not say online MBA and that my potential employer would have heard of the college. I did not want a degree from the University of Phoenix. I think that there is a stigma to their degrees and that people believe that they are just a diploma mill. I looked into several programs and decided on Ellis College. They are the online division of the NYIT (The New York Institute of Technology). Ellis College is fully accredited and the diploma DOES NOT mention online degree.

Since graduation I have changed careers and been on several interviiews. I have never been asked about how I got my MBA. I am sure that there are other quality online MBA programs, but I think that the key is to look for a brick and mortar school and a degree that does not distinguish itself as "Online."

The following is a description of how online classes work at Ellis College. I cannot comment on other institutions. Ellis College offers Associate, Bachelor and MBA degrees. The classes can be challenging as a short paper is due each week. The papers are ussually between 300 and 500 words and all of the information can be found in the class materials. It is basically set up to make sure that you have read the information. All papers are run through Turnitin. This is a program that searches both the internet and previously handed in papers and checks for plagiarism. It is the same program used by most schools at this time. If you turn in all of the papers you will pass. If you put in the extra effort you will get A's. They do put Cum Laude on the degree if you maintain a 3.5 GPA. The classes are 6 weeks long and you can take more than one at a time. Most of the information needed for the papers is on line, but you will need to purchase some of the recommended books. The book store is set up online and it is not difficult to determine which of the recommended materials you will need.

The classes are written by professors from a variety of schools including Harvard, Stanford and the University of Chicago. The classes are set up as a portal that you log into. The lessons are broken up by week with 6 to 8 sections in each week. The sections are written material with video clips of the professors who wrote the curriculum. The professors give insight into the lesson. The assignments are both individual and team. On team assignments you will need to work with other members of the class. This promotes interaction between both classmates and professors. The professors generally have specified times when the will hold open discussions with the entire class. You can also ask the professors questions via e-mail. They are extremely responsive as all professors are rated by the students at the end of each class. There are many open forums both class wide and school wide.

Financial aid is well integrated into the system and the financial aid department handles most of the paperwork. 100% of applicants for financial aid recieve it, and repayment does not begin until six months after graduation.
